Preventative Dentistry

Dentist with patientThe best cure for most dental problems is prevention. Our preventative dental strategies are delivered by our oral health therapist and hygienist. Each service is designed to limit your risk for common oral health concerns through proven and effective strategies.

Although we provide a wide range of major reconstruction services, we still find it best to prevent dental issues before they have a chance to start. Through regular six-month checkups, we can help you bypass risk factors and warning signs that might evolve into complex problems later on.

Checkups and Hygiene Visits

Most of our patients benefit from a preventative scale and clean every six months. During these visits, we remove buildup and stain accumulation that has formed since your last checkup.

Following your clean, our dentist will perform an extensive examination of each tooth. We’ll also evaluate existing restorations for early signs of wear.

A gum disease screening will include measurements of attached tissue and bone levels around each tooth. Since periodontitis is the top cause of tooth loss, early diagnosis and treatment is essential.

If you show signs of clenching or grinding, we’ll recommend a custom mouthguard or bite splint to prevent unnecessary tooth wear. It’s best to intercept such issues in someone in their teens or 20s as opposed to waiting to repair severe damage in their 50s or 60s. Be sure to let us know if you ever suffer from TMJ pain, muscle soreness or snoring.

A deadly and hard-to-detect disease, oral cancer affects individuals of all ages. Certain risk factors like sun exposure or tobacco use can put some people at a higher risk of developing pre-cancerous tissues.

We carefully screen all patients for irregular and pathological tissues, as early diagnosis is the key to combating this disease.

Therapy for Gum and Bone Disease

Periodontal infections tend to include symptoms of bleeding, swollen gums, gum recession, tartar buildup and tooth mobility. Caught early enough, we can provide therapeutic deep cleanings that halt the disease progression and preserve your smile.

During your exam, we’ll carefully measure the attachment levels of your gum tissues to determine if there are “pockets” that may be catching bacterial debris. We’ll also take X-rays to screen for the extent of bone loss that has taken place. If pockets are quite deep, scaling will help to remove the source of infection. To keep you comfortable, local anaesthetic or happy gas is available upon request.

Our comprehensive preventative strategies have your long-term health in mind. Left untreated, gum disease isn’t just detrimental to your smile; it can raise your risk of other serious medical conditions. Stroke, heart attack, diabetes and pneumonia are just a few examples. By keeping your smile healthy and clean, you can give your immune system the boost it needs to keep the rest of your body performing optimally.

Do you play sports? Are you prone to clenching and grinding your teeth? Our custom sports mouthguards can protect the integrity of your teeth before the damage is done. They’re a smart investment when it comes to keeping your smile healthy.
